What is the NYS Independent Film Tax Credit Program?

The NYS Independent Film Tax Credit Program provides a 30% refundable tax credit on qualified production costs. In addition, several incentives can substantially increase the total benefit:

• County Incentive Bonus: Productions that film primarily in designated counties — including Orange County — are eligible for an extra 10% credit, bringing total tax credits to 40%.
• Scoring Bonus: If a production hires five or more musicians, it qualifies for an additional 10% credit on scoring costs.
• Production Plus Incentives: Companies completing multiple projects in New York can earn 5–10% more, which allows productions in Orange County to reach up to 50% in total tax credits.
• Relocation Incentives: Series moving production to New York State may claim eligible relocation costs up to $6 million.
