New York State Independent Film Tax Credit Opens July 13

The New York State Independent Film Production Tax Credit program opens its second 2026 application window on July 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. EDT. As a result, independent filmmakers have another opportunity to access valuable tax incentives while filming in New York State.

Governor Kathy Hochul created the program to strengthen New York’s independent film industry and support economic growth statewide. In addition, the program offers a unique benefit. Eligible productions can claim their tax credit in the same year they complete the project.

Applications remain open through November 12, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. EST, pending available funding. However, producers should not wait to apply. The state reviews applications on a first-come, first-served basis. The timestamp on the submitted project summary determines an application’s place in line.

To qualify, productions must begin principal and ongoing photography within 180 days of submitting their application. Therefore, filmmakers should review the requirements and prepare their materials as early as possible.

For productions planning a Hudson Valley shoot, Orange County offers a wide range of film-friendly locations, experienced crews, and production resources. Moreover, the Independent Film Production Tax Credit can help maximize a project’s budget while filming in the region.
